For some, going back to school can be a fearful experience.
"About 160,000 students skip school every day for fear of being bullied," Travis Brown, an anti-bullying coach, told students Wednesday at St. Joseph’s High School in South Bend.

It is not just the weight of hefty textbooks and hours of homework some kids fear when heading back to school, but some fear the possibility of being bullied. Bullying seems to be becoming a rising trend in schools across the country, so one man is on a nationwide tour to stop it.Bullying happens on buses, in the cafeteria, gym, hallways, playground, in classrooms and now even in cyberspace.

Facebook's marketing director and sister of founder Mark Zuckerberg has called for an end to online anonymity to help stop cyber-bullying.
Randi Zuckerberg said internet users would "behave a lot better" if people were forced to use their real names when communicating on the online. "I think anonymity on the internet has to go away," she said during a panel discussion on social media hosted by Marie Claire magazine.

THURSDAY, April 21 (HealthDay News) -- Student bullies, their victims and bully-victims -- those who are victimized and also engage in bullying -- face a broad range of health risks, including family violence and intentional self-harm, a new U.S. study finds.
In a survey of 5,807 middle-school and high-school students from almost 138 Massachusetts public schools, researchers found that those involved in bullying in any way are more likely to contemplate suicide and engage in self-harm, compared to other students.

The schoolyard bully has gone digital.
As more and more young people have access to computers and cell phones, a new risk to teens is beginning to emerge. Electronic aggression, in the form of threatening text messages and the spread of online rumors on social networking sites, is a growing concern. Researchers estimate that between 9 percent and 34 percent of youth are victims of so-called “cyber-bullies.” And as many as one out of five teens has bullied another youth using digital media, reports a special issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health.

But new research suggests that the road to high school popularity can be treacherous, and that students near the top of the social hierarchy are often both perpetrators and victims of aggressive behavior involving their peers.

Five teenagers have taken their lives
Five teenagers in the United States have taken their lives in recent weeks – all reportedly because they were openly gay or thought to be gay. Most recently, that includes Raymond Chase, a 19-year-old sophomore at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. Mr. Chase hanged himself in his dorm room last Wednesday.
